Monthly Machine Tool Orders (April 2023)
The total value of machine tool orders in April was 132.69 billion yen. This was a decrease of
5.9% compared to March 2023 and marked the first month of month-on-month decline in twomonths. Moreover, this figure represented a decrease of 14.4% compared to the same monthof the previous year and marked the fourth consecutive month of year-on-year decline.The total amount of orders fell below 140 billion yen for the first time in two months, howeverexceeded 100 billion yen for 27 consecutive months.
Orders in April continued to be at a solid level, mainly due to strong foreign orders, althoughdomestic orders showed a reaction to the effect of the end of the period. We will continue topay close attention to financial trends and the outlook for the global economy.
Domestic orders fell by 15.5% from March, amounting to 41.72 billion yen.This marked thefirst month of month-on-month decline in two months. Furthermore, this figure was adecrease of 21.5% from the same month of the previous year and marked the eighthconsecutive month of year-on-year decline. Looking at major industries, orders compared toMarch fell by 10.4% in industrial machinery, by 8.2% in motor vehicles, by 26.1% in electrical& precision machinery, and rose by 7.7% in aircraft, shipbuilding & transport equipment.
Foreign orders fell by 0.7% from March to 90.97 billion yen, marked the first month of month-on-month decline in two months. Likewise, foreign orders showed a decrease of 10.7% fromthe same month of the previous year, and this marked the fourth consecutive month of year-on-year decline. By region, orders from Asia fell by 1.4% from March to 41.12 billion yen.Thiswas a decrease of 14.2% from the same month of the previous year. Orders from Europe rose
by 5.1% over March to 20.78 billion yen. This was an increase of 0.4% over the same month ofthe previous year. Orders from North America fell by 4.7% from March, amounting to 26.65billion yen. This figure was a decrease of 13.8% from the same month of the previous year.
