ESRD也被称为终末期肾功能衰竭，是指肾脏功能发生不可逆转的衰退，几乎完全丧失自主清除血液中的废物的能力，使得患者只能依赖肾替代治疗，即肾移植和透析治疗，以维持正常生命需要，其中多数患者通过接受血液透析治疗来延长生存期。当患者的肾小球滤过率(Glomerular Filtration Rate,GFR)小于15 mL/min/1.73m2时，患者即需做透析前准备I。
