The Departmentof Economicand Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariatis a vitalinterfacebetween globalpoliciesinthe economic,socialandenvironmental spheres andnational action.The Departmentworks inthree main interlinkedareas:()it compiles,generates and analyses a wide rangeof economic,social and environmental data andinformation on which States Members of theUnited Nations drawto reviewcommonproblemsandtotake stockof policyoptions;(i)itfacilitates thenegotiations of MemberStates in manyintergovernmental bodies on joint courses of action toaddress ongoingor emerging global challenges;and (ii)it advises interested Govermments on thewaysand means of translating policy frameworks developed in United Nations conferencesand summits into programmes at the country level and,through technical assistance,helps build national capacities.
